Semboku was created on September 20, 2005 from the merger of Kakunodate, Tazawako, and Nishiki, all from Senboku District. The total area is 1,093.64km², and as of 2011, the city has an estimated population of 29,218.

The former town of Semboku

The town of Semboku (仙北町 Senboku-machi?) was a town located in Senboku District, Akita, Japan.

On March 22, 2005, the town was merged with the city of Ōmagari; the towns Kamioka, Nishisenboku, Nakasen, Kyōwa, Ōta; and the village of Nangai, all from Senboku District to form the new city of Daisen.

In 2003, the town had an estimated population of 7,803 and a density of 263.97 persons per km². The total area was 29.56 km².

The Tamagawa Hot Spring in Semboku, Akita Prefecture, Japan is the highest flow rate hot spring in Japan. Tamagawa Hot Spring has a flow rate of 150 liters/second. The Tamagawa Hot Spring feeds a 3 meter wide stream with a temperature of 98 degrees C. The water From Tamagawa Hot Spring is also very acidic, with a pH of about 1.1.

There is also radioactive radium gas and other radioactive materials dissolved in the water from Tamagawa Hot Spring.
